Chennai, March 27, 2026: To commemorate Purple Day, the global initiative for epilepsy awareness, Gleneagles Hospital, Chennai (part of the Fortis Healthcare network) and a leader in epilepsy care in Tamil Nadu announced the successful treatment of 9-year-old Master Anand (name changed), who had been suffering from severe, drug-resistant epilepsy. The hospital organized a “Seizure-Free Program: The Journey of a Patient” to showcase how advanced surgical intervention can offer a new lease on life for those who have exhausted traditional medical options and launched Epilepsy Care Package priced at ₹6,500, aimed at improving access to early diagnosis and timely intervention.
Master Anand from Chennai experienced multiple seizures every week. These episodes led to frequent falls, leaving the child with numerous scars and bruises. Despite being treated with multiple medications and a restrictive ketogenic diet, he remained unable to achieve a seizure-free state, with the condition severely hindering his speech and physical safety. The complexity of the case stemmed from scarring on both halves of his brain, making it nearly impossible to pinpoint the exact origin of the seizures using standard methods.
To overcome these challenges, the medical team at Gleneagles Hospital Chennai utilized Stereo-EEG (SEEG), a sophisticated procedure involving the implantation of electrodes through tiny drill holes in the skull to accurately map the seizure focus.
Localization: Monitoring revealed that the seizures originated from the left parietal scar.
- The Procedure: On November 18, 2025, the patient underwent a second-stage surgery to disconnect the left parieto-occipital lobe.
- The Result: Since the surgery, the patient has remained completely seizure-free for four months.
“Stereo-EEG provides hope for such difficult and complex cases to get a chance at a cure. Without the accurate localization of his seizure focus, it would not have been possible to undertake this surgery,” stated Dr. Lakshminarayanan, Senior Consultant Pediatric Neurologist, Gleneagles Hospital Chennai
“The patient’s recovery has been exceptional, showing no new neurological issues post-surgery. His medical requirements have significantly decreased, allowing him to transition from a restrictive ketogenic diet back to a normal diet, added Dr. Nigel Symss, HOD of Neurosurgery, Gleneagles Hospital Chennai
Ms S Niranjani, Chief Operating Officer and Hospital Head, Gleneagles Hospital Chennai, lauded the achievement, emphasizing the hospital’s commitment to bringing world-class technology to Tamil Nadu. Dr. Praveen Chander, HOD of Neurology, noted that epilepsy surgery offers a “potential cure to many patients with uncontrolled epilepsy,” replacing a family’s constant fear with the joy of a healthy child.
This surgical success was a multidisciplinary triumph led by the neurosurgery and neurology teams, with critical support from Neuro-anaesthetists Dr. Prasad and Dr. Mohana Selvi.
